Medium/Fine Grain Whetstone

Not having used a whetstone before I can't comment on this product relative to any other whetstone. There is clearly an art to using one and I would have liked a more comprehensive instruction manual supplied with the product. What I do like however is the Wusthof quality-feel and they way my knives felt after using it - they're most certainly sharper! A bit of a drawback is the lack of a durable storage box for the stone - it is only supplied in a cardboard box, so long-term storage is probably best in something sturdier. While I'm still a novice at using a whetstone I most certainly have faith in the Wusthof brand and have no doubt that a little practice is all it takes to have a kitchen full of razor-sharp knives that are a pleasure to use once more! Note to fellow novices: Wusthof has a whetstone slider, a nifty gadget to guide the user on the correct angle when sharpening - I would highly recommend this. Read more

4 Stars because it's not as long or as wide as some others on the market. I get the feeling the stone is also a bit softer so more prone to wear.

That said, I've revived a few knives with this stone and they are sharper than when they came out of the box. No question about it.

If your knife is badly damaged you'll need a coarser stone to cut down on the time needed to sharpen but if the edge is just blunt, maybe with a few tiny chips in it, this combination stone will do you just fine.

Use once to twice a year, with a ceramic/diamond rod in between and you'll never need anything else to keep the edge in frighteningly sharp condition.

I should've bought one of these years ago! I was expecting it to be difficult to use and require immense patience. I was wrong! It is both simple to use and surprisingly quick. All you need is a moderately steady hand so that you can keep the blade angle fairly constant. I've used lots of the "easy" sharpeners in the past and have been disappointed by all of them. I have not been disappointed by this whetstone. It quickly gets my blades to a level of sharpness I've only experienced when I've had them professionally sharpened. Read more

The whetstone was easy to use after looking up some videos on how to use it. Our knives have been the sharpest since first buying them.
