–Bed LinenFabulous fabrics for every fancy — the lowdown on thread count, weave & material
When you climb into bed, do you prefer a soft and fuzzy feel or is it crisp, starched cotton you crave? Do you feel the same in summer and winter? Maybe you're particular about textures or the way the material drapes around your bed? All this comes down to the cleverly balanced combination of fabric type, weave style and thread count.
There's a sound slumber sweet spot for every kind of sleeper — we're here to help you find yours.
–Thread count — what is it and why does it matter?
Thread count refers to the number of threads horizontally and vertically per square inch. Essentially, it's an indication of the density of the fabric — a higher thread count means a higher density and more tightly woven threads, which usually results in a heavier fabric with less air circulation.
Thread counts can become complicated and there's a misconception that higher is always better but here are a few important facts to keep in mind when looking at thread counts.
- Higher isn't necessarily always better. If you're after a lighter finish, a lower thread count in a percale weave is ideal, whereas if you're after a more lustrous, heavier fabric, a sateen weave in a higher thread count is the better choice
- The way the thread is woven plays an important role.Plain weave (used for cotton percale) and satin weave (used for sateen) are the most common weave styles for bed linen — read more about them below. Percale usually has a lower thread count but it's more breathable, whereas, sateen has a higher thread count with a heavier, softer finish.
- Quality of threads is far more important than quantity. Because people have been lead to believe higher thread count means better bedding, manufacturers sometimes inflate thread count by using ply (the number of single threads twisted together in yarn) instead of true thread count.
- When thread counts look abnormally high or low, ask for more details. Good quality percale usually ranges between 200 and 300 thread count. Good quality sateen ranges between 300 and 600 thread count.

–Weave style — which one is right for you?
Thread count refers to the number of threads horizontally and vertically per square inch. Essentially, it's an indication of the density of the fabric — a higher thread count means a higher density and more tightly woven threads, which usually results in a heavier fabric with less air circulation.
Thread counts can become complicated and there's a misconception that higher is always better, but here are a few important facts to keep in mind when looking at thread counts.
–Percale
- Woven in a classic one-under-one-over criss cross pattern, Percale is a plain, tight knit weave with a matte finish
- It has a crisp, lightweight feel and is known for its breathability
- Percale gets better with every wash, it won't pill over time and it's durable
- Usually woven with pure cotton or cotton blends
- Good quality percale sheets generally have a thread count ranging between 200 and 400
- Great for warm sleepers or for use in warmer climates

Many people confuse plain weave and percale — plain weave is the simplest and most common type of weave, creating a balanced and durable fabric that’s perfect for everyday use. Percale, on the other hand, is a specific type of plain weave that features a higher thread count and a tighter, crisper feel.

–Sateen
- Woven even more tightly in a one-under-three-over pattern, sateen exposes more of the thread surface giving it a luxurious, satiny sheen
- Usually woven with thicker yarns, sateen has a heavier feel and is generally warmer
- Naturally wrinkle-resistant due to the tight weave, sateen has a smooth look and is relatively hassle-free to care for
- If you like buttery softness, you'll love the silky feel of sateen
- Good quality sateen sheets generally have a thread count ranging between 300 and 600
Sateen is great for those who are easily cold or looking for a heavier, warmer feel.
–Other popular weave styles with a bit more texture
- Waffle weave bed linen has a pleasantly textured, soft, springy feel to it. It creates a cosy, laidback look and because it doesn't require any ironing, it is a joy to use and care for
- Jersey knit fabric feels similar to the texture of a comfy T-shirt and is favoured for next-level softness when used for bed linen. This weave style is also warm and has a bit of stretch, which makes it harder to fold and straighten
- Jacquard bedding is made on a loom fitted with jacquard to create an intricate, detailed pattern which is woven into the fabric rather than printed or embroidered. This can give a very luxurious look and feel but care instructions should be followed exactly for this weave style
Sateen and percale weave duvet cover sets are generally chosen as they are the most practical to use and care for, but choosing a textured option as an alternative adds decorative detail and depth to your bedroom. It all depends on what you prefer — easy, no-fuss bedding? Go for sateen or percale. Prefer something a little different? Try a more textured weave style.

–The lowdown on yarn dyed fabric
Yarn-dyed fabric is a textile where the yarns are dyed before they are woven into fabric. This process involves colouring the threads individually and then weaving them together to create intricate patterns and rich, vibrant hues. The result is a fabric that boasts an enduring, deep colour that won't fade easily over time. This method also allows for more complex and detailed designs, offering a unique aesthetic that can't be achieved with piece-dyed fabrics, where the fabric is dyed after it has been woven.
But why choose yarn-dyed fabric for your bedding? The benefits go beyond just beautiful colours and patterns
- The dye penetrates deep into the yarn, making the fabric more resistant to fading and wear, ensuring that your bedding looks fresh and vibrant for years to come
- Yarn-dyed fabrics often have a richer texture and greater depth of colour, creating a more luxurious and sophisticated look
- This fabric comes in various weaves and patterns, from classic checks and stripes to intricate jacquards, allowing you to find the perfect match for your style and decor
