This Slab of Seed will grow you 3 delicious heirloom lettuce varieties:
- Bronze Mignonette Lettuce has been a popular heirloom lettuce for over 100 years! It's from the Siberian region of Russia and is very cold hardy as well as heat tolerant lettuce, which is slow bolting. The lettuce heads reach 20cm across with crumply, crisp leaves. This variety looks and tastes delicious in salads and on sandwiches. Plants produce oakleaf-style leaves that are green with a bronze tint. This lettuce will produce late into winter and will tolerate heating more than most varieties due to its low profile to the soil. Oakleaf-shaped leaves will not overheat in the sun. Rich in vitamins E, K, A, C, and Potassium, fibre, as well as iron
- Tasting note: Crispy & tender
- Forellenschluss Lettuce is an old Austrian heirloom that can be traced back to 1793 and the name means speckled like a trout. A superb, gorgeous Romaine lettuce that is full of deep red speckles and the leaves are very crispy with thick midribs. They grow quickly in cold weather but will bolt in the heat. This unusual lettuce is very exotic and will turn any salad into a gourmet dish. It bolts easily so plant it in a cool spot
- Tasting note: Crispy & exotic
- Lambs Lettuce (or Mach ) is small to medium in size with delicate, elongated leaves that can grow up to 15cm in length. The bright green leaves are thin, pliable, and smooth with a spatulate shape and grow in a loose, rosette pattern of 6-8 leaves. The ends of the leaves are typically rounded with semi-toothed edges, and prominent veins span across the surface. The stems are also green, razor-thin, and tender. Mache lettuce is soft, velvety, and crisp with a mild, herbal, and nutty flavour. Mache was once considered a weed in Europe before it was cultivated and grown for consumption. Found in corn, wheat, and rye fields, farmers in France began noticing the weed and discovered that it was edible, and began cultivating it as lettuce in the 17th century. Today Mache is a favourite green in France and is traditionally dressed in a simple vinaigrette
- Tasting note: Tender & fresh
About Sow Delicious
In 2013, Vanessa Jacobs set out to find the simplest way to grow a garden fit for a foodie, giving people the opportunity to proudly plant a garden that is Sow Delicious! She came up with the idea for the ‘Slab of Seed’ which might look like a slab of chocolate, but is made from a special blend of organically enriched super-soil and infused with rare heirloom seed – the purest & oldest seed on earth which is also non-GMO. The slabs are handmade in a unique little chocolate factory in the heart of Eden in The Garden Route.
