Care instructions
‐ Collapse this SectionHow to season your carbon steel wok
- Before you start using your new wok, wash it in warm water (do not use an abrasive cleaner on the inside!)
- Place it on the cooker over a medium to high heat for a few minutes and wait for all the moisture to evaporate
- Once the pan is completely dry, add a couple of teaspoons of oil, and swirl it all around the wok (including the sides) to coat evenly
- Once the oil begins to smoke, remove from the heat and allow to cool
- Using a piece of kitchen paper wipe away the excess oil. This should be done at least twice before you begin cooking with it as this will ensure even heat distribution during stir-frying, and will help to lock in flavours
- The wok is now ready to use
How to care for your wok
- After each use clean with hot water only, allow to thoroughly dry and wipe the interior with oil to prevent rust and to build a protective non-stick patina
- It is common for the natural material to darken over time — this will have no impact on its usage
- Don't leave the wok to soak in water
- Gentle use of a non-abrasive scouring pad is allowed
- Always ensure that the size of the flame on the gas stove is properly controlled and does not flare up the side of the cookware and overheat the handle
- Never leave an empty wok or one that has boiled dry on a hot element or burner
- If left to boil dry, make sure you turn off the heat source immediately and do not touch the pan until it has completely cooled

Carbon steel is supposed to 'stain'

Woks made of carbon steel will discolour with use. If you keep using it regularly, it will eventually turn black from the patina that forms over months or even years of making delicious stir-fries. In fact, that's what makes a wok beautiful over time, and the surface takes on a bit of flavour too, which adds dimension to your stir-fries. So embrace the 'stains'. Don't try to remove them with soap or any other detergent, and definitely don't try to scrub them off. As long as no burnt-on pieces of food remain and as long as you dry the wok well over heat after use and treat it with a little oil, it will last for decades. Read more

Great product for the price, it's actually quite difficult to find a carbon steel wok.
Ignore the negative reviews, those people didn't season their wok properly, and have not taken the proper care - it is supposed to stain and will form a non stick patina over time the more you use it..

You need to research steel woks before buying

I did some online research first, having previously had issues with “non-stick” woks. Am delighted with my new steel wok, is more solid than I expected. Uses more oil, but there are healthy options like avocado oil which I am using. I clean it immediately with hot water and a plastic scourer which does the job perfectly. Important to dry it properly, then I rub a little oil into the inside surface and store in a bag I made for the purpose, to keep dust from the oiled surface. Read more

This is an excellent product, the steel means you can heat it right up without fear of damaging non-stick, which is essential for Asian cooking. Once seasoned well and kept oiled before and after use, it doesn't stick at all! Love that it will just get better with use instead of losing non-stick and needing to be replaced. It doesn't stay with the clean steel look, it changes colour as the oil and heat seal it, as its' meant to do, so it doesn't look new and pretty but works amazingly! Read more

Disregard any negative reviews about this wok. Those people have no idea what carbon steel is and how it works. This is not stainless steel. It's meant to develop a patina with seasoning and use. And I tell you now, I have one gorgeous patina developing on mine. Done right, your seasoning will provide non-stick qualities and even the most delicate foods will slide right out.
If you don't know how to season a wok, watch a few videos. If taking care of a beautiful piece of cookware isn't your jam, get Uber Eats or Mr Delivery.
I wouldn't trade in the experience of owning this beautiful piece of cookware for anything! Read more

The flavour of the food cooked in this wok is just amazing. Treat the wok before use as instructed on the user manual attached. My ONLY problem with this Wok is its size - I will buy another if they bring them out in a bigger size!!!

Retail stores only keep the non stick woks. They all look spliff but do not do the job of an authentic wok. This plain steel wok that yuppiechef stock is the real thing. Real wok for somebody who loves to cook. Buy it you will never look back.

Before use, make sure the carbon steel wok is seasoned as per the instructions.
The non-stick quality of the wok improves with use and delivers an excellent, uniquely tasty stir fry!

I wanted a stainless steel wok because the Teflon on other woks had come off and I was probably eating it. This is a nice product and I followed the instructions about seasoning it.
However, I made the mistake of leaving it to dry after the first use, and it went completely rusty overnight, so I had to Google how to get it clean again, which was no easy feat. It cooks well though now and I can make great stir-fries. Read more

Even from the first use (after following the seasoning instructions), this wok has performed perfectly. It's like having a non-stick pan you can abuse without worrying, and cleaning is a breeze.
I just wish there was a bigger size - size is perfect for a two-person stir fry, but a bit small for anything bigger.

You cannot go wrong with this sturdy carbon steel wok. Stay away from stainless steel and non-stick woks. This wok can take the high heat one needs to stir fry properly. Just be sure to season your wok properly! That means:
1. Use a green scrubbing pad and dishwashing soap to completely remove the laquer coating — that was put on by the factory to prevent rusting in transit
2. Apply a thin layer of Canola oil with a white paper towel.
3. Heat the wok on high heat. The oil will now smoke and burn off. This is what you want! Add at least 3 layers of Canola oil and burn these in to the metal. You should be left with a black/deep brown coating - called the Patina. Treat the inside and outside of the wok this way. Now the wok will be non-stick and protected from rusting! Watch YouTube videos to see people doing this in action. If you don't season your wok — don't expect to be able to stir fry properly. A tip: use a gas burner to do the seasoning. If you use a flat plate you will only be able to season the bottom of the wok and not the sides. With a gas burner you can angle the sides into the flame to burn the oil on the sides of the wok. I used a portable Alva gas stove to do the seasoning. Worked like a charm. Happy Wokking! :) Read more

After following the curing instructions for the wok, I used it for the first time. Has a large burn mark that covers half the base. Very disappointed.

Orange stain marks after first wash

Got this as a gift and after the fist wash in warm soapy water as per the instructions, dark orange stain marks appeared when it was dry. We did however make a lovely stir fry in it. Got instructions from Yuppiechef on how to care for it.

Cooking with the wok was great. However, after we washed it in warm water with a sponge the bottom section was stained. Can't remove the stain marks. We are very disappointed about this.

This is a good product, nice weight and very sturdy, also easy to use. The instructions are a bit unclear about how to season the wok as it differs from the general method of seasoning a wok.
Also it needs to be dried immediately after washing or it will rust.

Replaced a very high end enamel, non stock wok.
Once seasoned the carbon steel wok turns out to be super-non-stock with no chemicals and much better at getting hot and stir-frying.
