Product information
‐ Collapse this SectionWonderbag's clever insulating properties allow food that has been brought to the boil to finish cooking while in the bag. This greatly reduces the use of additional energy. Made with colourful fabric and lined with a more resistant fabric, this bag includes a toggle for more convenient closing. The original Wonderbag is insulated with PU foam with a fire retardant solid foam base.
- A Wonderbag can significantly reduce a family's fuel usage, saving money and electricity
- Just bring food to the boil, and insulate it inside the Wonderbag to let it finish cooking over the next few hours
- Only use with pots with short handles to allow for sufficient insulation
- The repurposed chipped foam in the bag and its fuel-saving properties make it environmentally-friendly and sustainable
- It reduces accidents or fire hazards in the kitchen because stoves are used less
- It reduces time spent cooking, giving more time for other activities
- It is the ideal outdoor and camping accessory as it’s portable, light-weight and plug-free
- It not only cooks food and keeps it warm, but it can also be used to keep food or drinks (think ice cream) cold
- When a pot is insulated in a Wonderbag at a fairly constant temperature, less evaporation occurs, so less water is needed
- A portion of all proceeds of a Wonderbag go to the Wonderbag Foundation to support Wonderfeasts and subsidise Wonderbags to vulnerable and impoverished communities in Africa
Note: This product is not watertight, and if knocked over, the contents are likely to spill out. Let the Wonderbag work its magic away from children.
About Wonderbag
Voted one of the world's Top 50 Genius Companies by Time Magazine. Founded by Sarah Collins in 2008, the Wonderbag was developed as a solution to the South African energy shortage forcing blackouts across the country — with the aim of allowing families to continue cooking daily meals even with the absence of power. Inspired by a method her grandmother had used in the 1970s to help save power when cooking, this social enterprise is empowering communities around the world.

It isn't often that one finds a fair priced product that delivers above and beyond your expectations.
In short: If you're in the market for the features this product delivers. Buy it. It's a no-brainer.
My experience:
I'm a fan of potjiekos - so I used my usual recipe in a flat bottom #12 cast iron enamel coated pot (Le Creuset clone).
dish was a lamb neck pot with pumpkin, onions and fresh herbs and spices. I browned the lamb, sauted the onions and herbs, then layered the meat at the bottom and put the rest on top. Lid on. Onto a medium gas flame for 30min, into the bag for 5 hours. Melt off the bone good. Group approval rating was off the charts.
Pros:
- Hands free cooking (no fiddling with gas/coals)
- Excellent heat retention (no need for re-heating even after 5hrs)
- Pleasing design
- Ample room (I took the Large)
- You could use it as a small-pet bed, seriously! (just put a blanket over it)
Cons:
- Unsure if repeated carrying by the straps of an enclosed cast iron pot will result in tearing of the material due to the high weight loading. That said, it is so well insulated you can carry it by the bag itself.
Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is my exceptionally high standards ;). And that I suspect a similar bag with thermal insulation like a Space Blanket/Mylar blanket would improve the bag by making it less bulky and more portable. Probably more expensive though.
Either way, one of my best Yuppiechef purchases. Read more

Have now bought 5 Wonderbags! One for me, one each for our Staff, and the others as gifts. Ours went on a recent 5 weeks camping trip and made life so much easier. It gets used a few times a week back at home. Saves gas, things doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot, can't imagine life without it.

I wish I'd bought one of these long ago! I like slow cooking and usually use an electric slow cooker. However, with us having loadshedding, it's a problem.
This Wonderbag solves the problem, as it doesn't require electricity/gas.
I made a pot of beef & veg soup. The beef was stewing steak and after a few hours in the Wonderbag, it was tender.
Absolutely wonderful! Do yourself a favour and get this! Read more

Very happy with my Wonderbag - excellent especially for winter comfort food. Never over cooks anything, like a slow cooker can tend to do.

I love my Wonderbag! It's totally incredible. I have found myself cooking a lot more so that I could use it.
So far I have made various stews (made in the evening and cooked over night), two roast lambs (made in the morning and cooked over the day) and rice (20 mins on the stove and an hour in the wonderbag). The rice is the best rice I have ever eaten and the stews and roasts came out incredibly too.
This has been a time and electricity saver and I can't wait to try out more recipes. It comes with a little recipe book so you will have an idea of where to start. If you're sitting on the fence, just jump over to the Wonderbag side, you won't regret it! Read more

The Wonderbag makes preparing delicious, hearty family meals a breeze. I love that I can pop the pot in the bag and carry on with other things. I bought a Wonderbag for myself and one for my mom. We've both been using them almost every day. I've made some chicken casseroles and curries which turned out beautifully. I also used it to cook rice and I was so impressed with the result. Fluffy rice in 1 hour without having to worry about the pot boiling over or running dry and catching. Read more

I've always used hot-boxes - so the new ones I have now are a lot "fancier" than my old ones - and work very well. Save electricity, water and time!

The star rating is temporary because I think I started with something out of the ordinary. The recommending it to a friend may still happen once I get it right. I tried the Wonderbag with samp. Perhaps I was too ambitious. It would've worked with rice I am sure, but with samp, when I came home after three hours, the samp wasn't quite cooked and the water was hot but not hot enough so I brought the pot of samp to the boil again and put it back in the bag. After two more hours it was fine. I may need to re review this in a while. Read more

I bought the Wonderbag for myself and for a wedding gift. This product is really wonderful. No need to worry that your food is burning. After the allocated time +-6 hours your food is cooked and ready to be served piping hot. I also use it for picnics. It can be used to keep food hot or cold. Try it, you won't regret it.

This product is amazing!!! It works for both hot and cold items!!!!
I used it to transport meat and travelled four hours back home with it, and when I got home it was still ice cold, as if I had just purchased it!!!
I also used it to cook an Indian rice dish, and it cooked the meat and potatoes to perfection... I simply allowed the food to come to a boil on the stove and then transferred the pot to the bag and left it in there for about two hours until lunchtime and it was still piping hot as if I just took it off the stove! I put a towel at the bottom and placed the pot on top of it, and I also put a towel on the top of the pot... So that there’s no mess...
A miracle product for sure!!!!! Read more

I cannot believe that not every person in RSA does not own one of these Wonderbags! AMAZING!
You bring your food to boil on the stove or in the oven and then transfer it to your bag. I made lamb curry yesterday - I put my pot in my Wonderbag at 11:30 and opened my bag at 18:30 - the pot was still too hot to touch and the meat fell off the bone! AND I saved on gas and electricity!
Would highly recommend this! Read more

REAL WONDERBAG

Review by Mariette M. on 8 May 2018, 1 month after purchase
I was contemplating for a few months if this bag is really as good as the reviews, well I think it is worth every cent. I have used mine to make soup, stew, rice, pap and even steamed ginger pudding, and I can only say I love it. You do however have to make sure your food is cooking 30min + before adding to bag and also not to be tempted to try and peek every now and then. But I would highly recommend it. Read more

I have given it as a gift to a friend who works long hours and has a family to feed. She sets it up before going to work and dinner is ready when she arrives home. It also cuts costs as the ingredients such as meat need not be on the high end of the scale.

This is about the 10th Wonderbag I have ordered for people in Piet Retief (eMkhondo) . It started with a gift for my mother. Then one to her home executive and then to all her friends. Now her friends want for their friends throughout Mpumalanga and Gauteng. Another order for 2 is on the way.

So I ask myself, "what took me so long to invest in the Wonderbag?" It is amazing. I have a fabulous slow cooker, but there are always electricity and safety issues.
Got my new wonderbag and tried this out: All in one pot brought the following to the boil: beef stew blocks, vegetables and I even added my rice. Placed in the Wonderbag as instructed and came home to a minor miracle. A perfectly tender, juicy curried beef stew.
I intend to give my housekeeper one for Christmas, and will be using this ingenious item often. THANK YOU WONDERBAG AND YUPPIECHEF. Read more

I love it, I don't mind having more than 3 so we can eat full meal.

I am absolutely blown away by this incredible product. I have already used it several times. I even use it to keep my stovetop kettle warm after boiling, so it's tea for hours.
Also loved learning that it can act as a cooler too. I have not tried it yet, but keen to see if it works next time we travel.
Very happy!

I made lamb stew the very first time using this bag, brought the pot to a boil for 15 minutes and then into the bag for 5 hours.
It came out tender and perfect. The only thing left to do was thicken the gravy which I did need the stove for.
Otherwise, a wonderful way to cook during load shedding! I intend to buy the Wonderbags as gifts in future.
