Some tips on using this guy

Okay as the previous review said, this is an absolutely awesome product. We wanted a proper built-in one someday, but I'd go so far as to say this one's better (read "easier to use").
However, I thought I'd add some of things we've learnt from using it a couple times now, so people don't make the same mistakes.
This assumes you're using wood, we haven't tried it with charcoal yet.
1. Add quite a lot of wood, at least a rugby ball sized amount (can't think of another way to put it).
2. You want this guy to be HOT, it's not like a braai, it can't be TOO hot. An ideal pizza should be cooked in 3 minutes.
3. Wait for the wood to stop smoking, if not, it will taint your topping with soot (the extent of this depends greatly on the type of wood obviously).
4. Close the hole at the top when you cook the pizzas, else the toppings won't cook properly.
5. For homemade dough, put the pizza on the stone. Check it every 10 seconds (not after a minute like the instructions say). As soon as it's firmish (not floppy), transfer it to the grid and cook it on there, that way the toppings cook before the base blackens.
6. Use flour on the the pizza making surface and the peel to ensure easy transfer, make sure the surface remains dry.
7. If you do mess up while transferring the pizza, fold it over and pretend you were making a calzone.
8. If you do have left over dough, consider making a test foccacia first to get an idea of how hot your oven is. Read more

I make a ton of pizza and this is the best way to cook it! The oven is extremely versatile - can be used for pizza and normal braaing, making it a must-have for anyone without a built-in braai.
It is also portable to a certain extent, depending on how strong you are as it is quite heavy, meaning you could take it to picnics and days out. It is extremely easy to use and easy to clean, does not need alot of charcoal and can even be used inside once it has stopped smoking! Read more

If you love Col'Cacchio kinda pizza then this oven is a must have. We tried the Gordon Ramsay pizza base recipe, topped with Mozzarella, roasted roma tomatoes and basil pesto.....and it was Amazing!!! If pizza could scream, it would scream good, rustic & super delicious . Get creative with your favourite toppings. You really cant go wrong with this.

Got this recently, based off of all the positive reviews on this thing. It lives up to them.
It's super simple to use, however you can't make too many pizzas without topping up the coals. We made 7 pizzas the first night and while we managed it, the last two were tight. If you want to do more, I'd suggest keeping another fire going in a braai and just transferring coals as you need them.
We also didn't practise the pizza transfer (with the peel) as advised in the instructions, which resulted in some hilarity and at least one calzone. Just make sure everything is floured well and absolutely no sauce comes between the dough and working surface, even on fifth one.
Overall, I'm very pleased and will definitely recommend this. Read more

A beautifully constructed oven with wide appeal and possibilities. For a first time ever pizza maker it was worth every cent. Caution should be taken not to make too much fire or heat the pizza stone too hot - this will result in burnt pizza and will spoil the whole experience. Follow the instructions and don't be in a rush and it's great fun for family and friends.

Super easy to fire up (just be patient for it to heat up) and you are producing perfect pizzas within 30 minutes. Takes approx 3 min per pizza and they are absolutely perfect. Pre made pizza bases kept in the freezer make life a lot easier and more spontaneous. We use ours all the time.

I bought this pizza oven for my husband for our fifth wedding anniversary. He was super impressed and couldn't wait to try it out. The first lot of pizzas we made (including dough from scratch!), didn't turn out that well, so I would recommend reading the instructions properly and testing the heat of the oven first before placing your pizza on the stone (ours was too hot so our first few pizzas burnt to a crisp). The next time we used the pizza oven, they turned out perfectly and were the tastiest pizzas ever! The oven is very easy to use and the pizzas it produces are out of this world! Read more

Not just for pizza

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is it is actually too efficient. I would like to cook pizza by putting it straight on the pizza stone, but you have to lift it after 20-30s onto the supplied stainless steel grid.
I've used it with wood and charcoal. Both work well though you need more wood than you might think at first since it needs to burn down to hot coals. Starting with firelighters is the main downside of charcoal, as that is pretty smelly. If you can start a charcoal fire without them, that's the way to go.
Otherwise, with a bit of practice you can make great pizza. And after, when the oven is still hot, but not as hot, you can bake other things. I've made bread and, you have to taste it to believe it: wood-fired cheesecake.
Some tips:
* assemble a pizza on the peel on a little loose flour, ensuring as you add toppings that it slides easily
* leave a little dough hanging over the side to put down first then slide the pizza onto the hot stone
* have the stainless steel grid handy to lift the pizza off the stone before it singes
* plan where to put the now hot stainless steel grid when you take it off to start the next pizza
* use the supplied tool to lift the stainless steel grid, or have a heat-proof pot lifter or tongs handy
* get yourself an extra-large flat pizza plate or chopping board for cutting the pizza

There are many ceramic cookers out there - many of them extremely expensive imports. Whilst I'm sure those have many virtues, this South African product is well made, portable and a joy to cook on. If you want an entry-level pizza oven, which can also be used for many other things, this is the best thing you'll buy this season.

What can I say other than OMG!! I have been making pizzas every Saturday night for the past 23 years, mostly under sufferance (LOL).
Since getting our Earthfire Pizza Oven three weeks ago, I have made pizzas on twelve occasions, and we both agree they are the best ever!! This product is so easy to use and so quick. It really is a must have for any pizza lover.

We have had our pizza oven for quite a few years and invite a group of friends around. They choose what they want on their pizza and we pop it in the oven to cook... We have a bread machine that makes the pizza dough, so it's such an easy way to entertain. As a result 4 of our friends have purchased their own ovens! The proof is in the pudding!!!!

This is a fabulous product and the centrepiece of many wonderful happy evenings. Follow the instructions well and enjoy. We took ours to Afrika Burn and it doubled as an open fire as well as pizza, bread oven. We even made scones!

An absolute must have for any pizza lover, scrumptious pizza in a jiffy. We found it easiest to pre(par)-cook the bases then present to everyone to "build a pizza" with their own delectable toppings to be finished off in flash. They really cook so quickly in this oven. 3 minutes compared to the 25 minutes that I normally waited in my normal oven.

We were desperately looking for something cool to do for my wife's birthday party. Looking for pizza stones on YC I eventually found this and read some of the reviews online.
Wow this thing is amazing. We tried it tonight (during load shedding) and it works brilliantly. We picked it up in no time. The pizzas really do take 4 minutes and we made three without it even cooling down. The base comes out exactly like it would from a full-size pizza oven. And as a bonus it keeps the kitchen warm too. One of the best purchases I've made in a long time. Apart from the fact that it makes amazing pizza (once you get the hang of it), we've used it for flatbreads, as well as naan.
We've also used it for slow roasting, curry, traditional sosaties and turkish-style adana kebabs as well as stews.
It's really easy to clean as well.

I agree with all the rave reviews, this really is a fantastic product which makes really great pizza's, some tips:
-Read the instructions and follow to the letter the first few times until you get the hang of it.
-Follow a simple dough recipe and use good quality stone ground flour if possible really makes a difference to the pizza bases.
- With the pizzas, less is more if you load too many toppings on, it weighs the pizza down and makes transferring from the pizza peel difficult.
- Also agree with Zania, make the oven as hot as possible, put onto the pizza stone for 20 seconds then onto the grid and cook the pizza on top of that for a few more minutes, great tip. Read more

I used to make my pizza's in my braai on a thin steel plate and thought that it worked quite well. Well, the pizza's were tasty but the base was never to my satisfaction.
I also used to buy pizza bases and then just added the ingredients.
Then, I saw this little piece of magic on your website but never thought that it could be any good. After reading all the reviews from other happy users I decided to buy one.
I obviously couldn't wait to try it out and so I made my first "Earthfire" pizza's last night. I also made my own bases and afterwards couldn't believe the difference in taste! I prefer fairly thin bases and that is what I achieved.
I must tell you that I had the very best home made pizza's ever and will not visit my local pizza outlet very soon. All that remains now is to experiment more with different toppings.
I followed all the instructions closely and the only mistake was that I accidently overcooked the second pizza as I never expected the stone to become so hot in such a short period. Even so, the pizza still tasted wonderful.

Bought it for my husband for his birthday after entering a competition where you can win one, but I did not have the patience to wait. It arrived in time (which must be mentioned, as Yuppiechef ALWAYS delivers on time) and we tested it immediately with ready-made base bought at PnP (will try the recipe supplied soon). It was the best pizza ever. No pizza shop can compete, honestly! Even my son (a snob when it comes to food) agrees. We tried a leg of lamb and that was also extremely good. Now this was one of the best items I had bought in a long time. My first attempt was not so good. The oven was too hot. My second attempt was great. We could not stop. The pizza became smaller and smaller, to enable us to keep on baking and to try new toppings. Now to try a whole bread. We love this little oven.

This is an absolutely great product. 20 minutes to warm up for 3 hours of pizza making. Pizza takes on average 3 to 4 minutes to bake. It's very easy to pack away and small enough to take on road trips.
My first oven arrived with a small crack where the handle was fitted. Yuppiechef replaced it within 3 days. Great service!

A friend has had one for years and I wanted a stylish little braai that would not rust too easily.

Please don't do as I did and try and make a log fire. Far too much smoke!!
Rather use charcoal.
I like the fact that one can use a commercial pizza tin to assemble the pizza on. Cook it until the base is set then it's easy to slide the pizza off the tin and onto the pizza stone where it browns to perfection.
